Current Bridges

Life Bridging Works is battling for the poorest of the poor as we seek to demonstrate God’s love by establishing paths out of poverty for some of the worlds poorest people.

The Trustees and the field agent have all too varying extents been involved in East Africa for over 15 years and have managed to establish a number of good relationships with key church groups or organisations.  These groups consist of reliable people with a proven track record and who operate in a team thus providing natural accountability. We are currently involved in South Sudan & Northern Uganda.

South Sudan has also been devastated by more than two decades of civil war. Maternal Mortality rate stands 10 times higher than Europe at 1.7%, with only 10% of all deliveries assisted by skilled health personnel. Infant Mortality rate for under-five is between 250-350 per 1,000 births.

Salt and Light Key Leaders

This area has the lowest routine immunisation coverage rated in the world with only 13% of children fully vaccinated. Malaria is considered hyper-endemic in all age groups. Over 90% of households do not have Insecticide-Treated Nets.  Physical stunting as a result of malnutrition effects 45% of children.

2% of boys and less than 1% of girls complete primary education.  In East Equatoria region less than a ¼ of children are in primary education and in the greater Kapoeta area the figures are significantly less, with girls be the worst effected.  In some villages in the greater Kapoeta area it is as low as 1 in 10 children in primary education. Northern Uganda has been ravaged by 20 years of civil war. Médecins Sans Frontières estimate that 1.6 million people have been displaced and 66,000 children have been forced to become soldiers or sex slaves. In some districts up to 9 out of 10 people have had houses destroyed and assets confiscated.

In addition to all this Uganda has many ongoing health issues. Malaria affects over 90% of the population.  A child is expected to suffer up to 6 bouts of malaria in one year. Uganda also has high incidents of diarrhoea, HIV/AIDS, bilharzia and TB with limited health care provision available in this area.
